Here is a summary of the PE continuing education requirements mandated by the District of Columbia Board of Engineering.
20 hours biennially. This rule is effective with the renewal date of August 31, 2020.
August 31 in even-numbered years
The board does not approve individual courses. The board requires that continuing education programs or activities "contribute to the growth of an applicant in professional competence in the practices of land surveying and professional engineering."
Not Accepted Topic Areas:
1. Personal Development
2. Firm Management
3. Business Skills
The catalog on this website lists courses and webinars by Topic Areas. Due to Board restrictions on content, you should avoid earning your PDH in the Topic Areas listed above.
In each renewal cycle, one hour must pertain to engineering ethics.
Online continuing education courses will be accepted. The licensee is required to retain a certificate of completion and a copy of the course outline in the event of an audit. Records must be retained 4 years.
- PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 4 years. PDHengineer helps you meet this requirement by providing you with the ability to instantly access and print a certificate upon successful completion of a course or webinar. Additionally, your certificates of completion are securely maintained by PDHengineer for a minimum of ten years and can be accessed online at any time through your login account.
- The continuing education rules were enacted in early 2019 to be effective with renewal date of August 31, 2020.
- Special requirement will apply for renewal of a license that has expired or has been inactive. An applicant for reinstatement of an expired license or renewal of an inactive license to practice as a professional engineer shall attest to having completed ten hours of credit in approved continuing education programs for each year the license was expired or inactive, up to a maximum of forty (40) hours, and shall include no less than one (1) hour on the subject of professional ethics.
